The term “tattoo flash” comes from the circus performers of the mid-to-late 1800s. These artists would exhibit their tattoo designs on sizable sheets of paper or cardboard, which were subsequently mounted on walls or shown in ‘flash racks’ for customers to browse and select from – thus the phrase ‘flash’.
