  • Can you be allergic to tattoo ink?   Yes!Yes. Although it’s not very common, you can be allergic to tattoo ink. Reactions can happen immediately or even months or years after getting a tattoo.Common symptoms of an allergic reaction include:
    • Persistent redness that doesn’t improve
    • Itching or a raised, bumpy rash
    • Swelling around the tattoo
    • Blisters or peeling skin
    • Small nodules or thickened skin in the tattooed area

  • Which ink colors cause the most allergies?    Red is the most common culprit. Many inks use iron oxide (rust), however, brands like Eternal and others use non metals, an are hypoallergenic 
  • Can tattoo ink cause infections? Ink that is contaminated can. Most professionals make sure they know what tattoo ink is safe to use, and if they have completed a BBP test, know how not to cross contaminate ink. 
  • Does tattoo ink travel to lymph nodes? Studies have found tattoo pigment and ink components deposited in regional lymph nodes, sometimes years after the tattoo was done. 
  • Is it safe to get tattooed while pregnant? It’s generally recommended to wait until after pregnancy to get a new tattoo. There isn’t good evidence establishing tattooing as safe during pregnancy, and the main concern isn’t necessarily the ink itself—it’s the infection and inflammatory risks from breaking the skin.
  • Why do certain colors fade fasterCertain tattoo colors fade faster because different pigments behave differently in the skin and react differently to light.
    • Yellow, orange, pink, and some reds often fade relatively quickly. Their pigments can be more vulnerable to UV exposure and the body’s gradual breakdown/removal of pigment.
    • Black and dark blue tend to last longer because their pigments absorb light differently and are often deposited at a density that remains visually strong as the tattoo ages.
    • White can change noticeably over time, sometimes becoming yellowish or grayish rather than simply “fading.”
    • Pastel colors tend to fade faster because they contain more white pigment and are usually less saturated to begin with.

    Sun exposure is a big factor

    UV radiation can break down tattoo pigments, and your immune system then helps remove some of those smaller pigment particles. That’s one reason tattoos exposed to lots of sunlight—especially hands, fingers, forearms, and other frequently exposed areas—often age faster.

    Skin location matters too. Areas with frequent friction, washing, or movement (like hands and feet) can lose crispness and color more quickly.

    Using broad-spectrum SPF 30+ once a tattoo has fully healed can help slow UV-related fading. For a fresh tattoo, however, follow proper healing instructions and keep it out of direct sun until it’s healed.

  • Does tattoo ink expire?Yes. Tattoo ink can have a shelf life and a “best before” or expiration date, depending on the manufacturer. In the U.S., though, cosmetic products aren’t generally required by federal law to print an expiration date, so practices vary.More importantly, old or improperly stored tattoo ink can pose a contamination risk. The FDA has found microorganisms in tattoo inks, including some that were still sealed, and contaminated ink can cause serious infections when injected into the skin.
  • Can you mix different brands of ink? Yes, if you know how. 
  • Why does black ink turn blue or green over timeMostly because the tattoo isn’t actually becoming blue or green in a simple chemical sense—it’s the result of how the pigment ages in the skin.Black ink is made from very dark pigments, often carbon black or similar materials. Over time, some pigment particles are broken down, transported away by immune cells, or become more dispersed.
    As the dense black pigment becomes less concentrated, the underlying skin starts contributing more to the color you perceive. Light scattering through the skin can make an old black tattoo look bluish, gray, or greenish.
    Sun exposure accelerates pigment degradation and can make this effect more noticeable.
    Older tattoo formulas sometimes contained mixtures of pigments that could produce a more obvious blue-green cast as the different components aged.
    Tattoo depth matters too. If pigment was placed too deeply, it can spread slightly into surrounding tissue (“blowout”), making the tattoo look blurry and blue-gray.
